Silicon Roundabout – Shoreditch tax haven creates start ups, growth and innovation

Occasionally I pick up a copy of the FT Weekend – there’s normally something in it that is thought provoking. This week it was the article on Silicon Roundabout that got me thinking. As software & web developers we like to keep an eye on what’s going on around the UK and the globe with regard techy stuff so we’d caught the Roundabout story before – particularly when David Cameron climbed aboard the roundabout in November in an attempt to take some credit.

For those that don’t know Silicon Roundabout is the name being rather incorrectly tagged onto an area around Shoreditch, London that has seen growth in the number of techy companies starting up (eg Tweetdeck). On the face of it cheap (all things are relative) accomodation seems to be the driver for the cluster – though there is another important factor that I’ll get to eventually. The Roundabout emerged with no apparent government intervention – it just sort of happened. New Start’s setting up in apparent serendipity in the same area.

If you read the latest article you’ll see that the word “hype” is used. That word helped me read the article with more interest than normal – it seemed to suggest a level of honesty and openness that is seldom the case in blatent PR pieces. We’ve sort of been here before haven’t we – Silicon Glen (when will we see your likes again) and Silicon Fen (is it still being called that?) prime examples.

Sadly though we are talking about London – a City that seldom needs any hype to generate interest. So why use the word “hype”  and why the need for the kiss of death “Silicon X” tag? Doing the google thing to find out a bit more reveals that the start ups that find themselves on the roundabout have concerns about the lack of funding. Sounds familiar. Scottish tech start ups have long complained about a lack of funding – but here are our Cockney (is Shoreditch cockney?) friends lamenting the same. Hmmm.

A  look at Techhub (just down from the A5201/A501 circle) reveals partners including Google. The Techhub partner page is quite funny – the normal list of supporters with a paragraph for each until you get to Google – it simply says Google, no explanatory text. Now thats being famous! Techhub is a cheap hot desk facility – a couple of hundred quid a month gets you in and mixing with other techy types. In London I’m guessing that’s pretty unique.

So we’ve had Valleys, Glens and Fens, but now we have a Roundabout – makes me wonder what next… car park, cul de sac, traffic island?  A case of ever decreasing circles? I hope not.

But what of Scotland – do we have a Silicon Roundabout or Silicon Traffic Island we can create hype about? I’m not sure - but we do have the odd cluster here and there. I think there is one near the Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow, there’s Appleton Tower in Edinburgh, and a few creative types hanging around Leith Docks, and I’d better not forget the Games thing in Dundee. Not bad – and thankfully none of them tagged “Silicon X”. We’re based in Stirling – clearly the epicentre of Silicon Bridge (copyright 2011 me, with thanks to William Wallace copyright 1297).

Hmmm Silicon Bridge – suddenly the Silicon prefix sounds ok – gather round everybody lets get Dave C and Alex S to jump on the Silicon Bridge bandwagon.

But just one last thing as the repeats of Colombo keep saying… and it’s rather important. Geographically sensitive Mrs O points out that Shoreditch is just outside the London Congestion Charge zone (though Techhub appears to be within it). I’ve no idea how many of these Start Up’s are outside the Charging Zone – but could it be a coincidence that Shoreditch is in a traffc Tax haven? And if it’s more than a coincidence that something as banal as a Congestion charge has made a difference  what does that tell us about the importance of taxes? In a few months the next Scottish Government will have the power to alter taxes – based on the Shoreditch example dropping taxes could have a significant and positive impact on the Scottish business start up rate and resultant economic growth.

If a tax charge on traffic near Shoreditch creates “Silicon Roundabout” surely lower taxes in Scotland would create “Silicon Scotland”. Now that would be a prefix worth having – however inappropriate to the type of businesses created.

Lets give tax cutting a bash – seems to have worked in Shoreditch. Surely it would work in Scotland.

Vince Cable – sly old fox leaks his speech and is everyones mate

Don’t you just love all the new politicians in charge these days. All fresh faced and scrubbed up – all armed with the “it wasn’t us that made this mess” excuse – love them, love them all.

But whose my favorite, Surf Boarding Dave, Yellow Tie wearing Nick, Daveward Milliband…. oh he’s Labour is he… hadn’t noticed.

This week my favorite has been mainly Vince Cable – the crafty old fox. He pre releases his “capitalism murders babies on the end of bayonets” quote and then delivers a few jokes about being Marxist at the Lid Dem Conference – brilliant stuff. He has a gift for doing the “honest broker” thing and of creating empathy – but will he do anything? (Apart from come over as your favorite uncle).

His speech was well publicised and more reported than his leaders (the Nick leader not the Dave leader). And what was in the speech – well errm – it was full of wonderful insights… maybe.

The link to the full speech is below – but in summary:

The banks need to support SMEs. We need Higher Education. We need to make sure capitalism doesn’t squash competition. Adam Smith was a very clever man. The Tories aren’t perfect. Labour don’t have the answers. Royal Mail staff will get free stamps when we flog it. Lets tax graduates fairly.

OK, OK fair enough Vince – can you please go fix it.

Top priority…. Go fix the fact that the banks are sitting on their hands and our QE money. And the fact that the Enterprise loan fund isn’t working despite the insurance premium demanded.

Next priority – treat graduates fairly – if they get a good job they already get top tax rates – why should they get double taxed – what’s all that about. Why is taxing graduates fairly being interpreted as they need to get taxed even more – what a lot of complete twaddle.

The leaked, widely reported, statements of the bleeding obvious, from my favorite new uncle is here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/sep/22/vince-cable-full-speech

Vince enough talking – do something to help the economy.

regards

your new nephew

Software investment Scotland

Good to see another investment deal related to Software in Scotland. The sum is around £850k for Factonomy and comes in large part from the guys at Sigma (and then matched up by the local support agency).

Best of luck to the Factonomy guys.

1992 – GDP growth revisited. Whitney Houston, I Will Always Love You

According to the CBI next year (thats 2009 for those not good at adding) will see the lowest economic growth since 1992 (that’ll be the lowest for 17 years for those not good at take aways).

That doesn’t sound very good to me – remember 1992? Nope I didn’t think you would – but do you remember Whitney and Costner doing the body guard thing. Yip, knew you would. So next year watch out for over the top ballads and men taking a bullet for their lover (Mrs O better duck).

For a fuller report on the CBI’s view we have the full story on our various financial news websites, such as our first time buyer mortgage website www.nowfirsttimebuyer.co.uk .

Don’t top up with the tips

Barpeople and waiterpeople (got to be PC) now have the protection of the High Court behind them – we report this on our self employed finance site. Tips are not part of the minimum wage (unless pooled and paid into your wage by the employer). HMRC fought the test case against Annabels. No doubt many self employed Hoteliers and small businesses will be cursing the decision.

Dear Darling…

The predictions are that Bank of England Governor Mervyn King will be getting the quil qwerty keyboard out to write a wee note to Alastair Darling – Chancellor and all round scape goat for anything bad happening in the UK economy.

The reason – well its the tipping point for inflation. Stats from the Office of National Statistics suggest that when they add up all the numbers we’ll be at 3.1% next week for the CPI. Maybe aye maybe no. But watch out for the media talking endlessly about this. The reason – petrol, and output prices, and petrol, and food prices and petrol. Lets face it – its petrol… it impacts everything we do. 139 USD for a barrel of Oil ain’t good news – but it can’t last….can it?

Putting more skin in the game

Good to see a Scottish technology company going on the acquisition trail and particularly exciting that’s it a North American business that they have acquired. Touch Bionics have acquired North American Inc Livingskin. A case of Livingstone company getting Livingskin. Touch Bionics are in the artificial limb business and the skin aspect is clearly an essential aspect of what they do – and so of course is the USA market.

Growth through acquisition is a tricky business but if you can pull it off then it obviously can work wonders. There aren’t a lot of businesses in Scotland in the technology sector who take this approach due in large part to a lack of funds and to some extent “bottle”.

Consuming another company is a challenging and time consuming business and the personalities of the acquired board and indeed staff can make proper integration slow and at times impossible.

Good for Touch Bionics – good to see them putting some skin in the game.

Software Scotland – its in the game

It’s been a long time since there has been a notable investment story for the software industry in Scotland so even though it was a month back – thank goodness for Realtime Worlds in Dundee, Scotland. They are developing a new game to be launched in 2009 and got the backing of USA based Maverick Capital to the tune of $50mn.

Software in Scotland has long struggled to raise large funds so good to see the games industry leading the way. Lets hope its the start of a trend. There are investment funds in Scotland who take large risks with young Software companies – but they can’t come near that level of funding.

Back in the software goldrush days of 1998-2000 all you needed was a pony tail to get investment and no business plan “we’d like to get in early” (great Dilbert cartoon). Today it’s a lot harder for software in Scotland. Lifesciences are the new big thing (well nano thing) and software is something you offshore. So lets hope that the Realtime deal shows the local investment community that software is worth a serious look.  Though I suspect if we want to see interest I’ll have to get over my nausea when playing Tomb Raider. So we’ll just stick to developing business software at Objective Associates.

Interest rates

A wee while back we commented that interest rates always tend to go higher than need be to control an economy. Well here we are a few months later on with the Bank Of England pulling interest rates down to stop the economy sliding into a hole. That tricky balancing act between inflation and growth? Well maybe.

But I think its got more to do with the Bank Of England trying to find customers for its money. Either way the Credit Crunch is here to stay for a while (at least over the next wet Scottish Summer) so in the gap that that creates we’ve filled up another bit of the internet with some bits and bytes that talk about busines loans in the UK – http://www.nowcommercialloan.co.uk.
